What is going on with Bath this Christmas? asks city trader

The owner of Bath Aqua Glass, Annette Dolan, is critical of the council's lack of clear communication over Christmas stall arrangements in Bath this year. She writes:

The Christmas market was cancelled, now there will be a so-called ‘small market’ of far fewer stalls and we are getting inundated with confused customers phoning up asking ‘what’s going on? Is there a market? Is there not a market?’

Normally we work very closely with the Bath Christmas market team to promote our beautiful city and all the independent traders that make it so special. There is nothing happening now and no collaboration with the traders who were not offered a stall this year. Why not?

As independent traders, we need clear communication from the Council so it does not ruin our Christmas trade on top of the Covid troubles we have all faced this year. Many of the shop premises in Bath are council-owned and many vendors are still trying to clear their overheads from the Covid deficit.

Do the council want more empty shops in January? As Christmas usually gets traders through the lean months of January, February and March, enabling them to pay their rent to the landlord, BANES. Are they not shooting themselves in the foot?

Please, please can the council communicate properly and promote our city as the magical Christmas destination that it is.
